Officer David Joins Chicago Police

David gets sworn in as an officer

“ He is not thinking at all about his cancer today. ”

Make-A-Wish teamed up with the Chicago Police Department to make 3-year-old David’s wish to be a police officer come true. After fighting cancer, he's ready to fight crime.

David, 3, really wants to fight the bad guys. After fighting off cancer, he's ready to step into a role protecting the community. Make-A-Wish, with amazing support from the Chicago Police Department, made David's dream a reality.

David’s wish is one of the rare occasions when we can invite many members of the community to actively participate as a wish is granted, and the Chicago Police Department did not disappoint.

After slipping into his official uniform, David met several fellow officers who would accompany him throughout his day. In a police motorcade, David moved from one police station to Chicago Police Department Headquarters, where he was officially sworn in and handled his first press conference. His smile never wavered and he took great joy in testing his newly issued bullhorn siren.

His training included a visit the Chicago Police Marine Unit near Navy Pier, where he and his family took a quick ride on the police boat. David was delighted to see it all, and really lit up when the Chicago Police Aviation Unit helicopter flew by. The next stop was McCormick place, where several different divisions of the department came together to train David on the equipment — he even met the canine unite and the mounted police!

Thank goodness he had all of that training because the monsters were waiting there to steal the money and cause mayhem. David, with help from his fellow officers, made quick work of the bad guys and saved the city from their dastardly deeds. He was happy to celebrate with his family and new friends after a tough first day on the job.

David’s day was very special to him, but it was also wonderful for his family to see him so animated and happy after all he has been through. Each time they look at photos or mementos from this day, they will be reminded of the compassion of the community and the many Chicago Police Department personnel who came together for him. David really enjoyed all of the special attention and the many wonderful gifts he took home. The many men and women from the Chicago Police Department who had a hand in making David's wish come true had a wonderful time sharing their passion for police work and felt their hearts full of joy at the end of the day as they saluted their new officer.
