Hazel is a funny, creative and studious girl from Rock Island who can be shy, though when she warms up she displays her wit and intelligence through every aspect of her life.
In 2015, Hazel was diagnosed with Leukemia which shifted her close-knit, easy going and private family into talking about heavy topics that dealt with her disease.
Hospital visits, painful treatments and endless “what to do” discussions became the norm. A social worker knew that an escape from reality of her medical situation would serve as a welcome relief for Hazel so she made an referral to Make-A-Wish®
“Many of Hazel's friends had been to Walt Disney World®
Resort but our family had never taken a vacation. When we would watch Disney movies at home we always said someday we would go to the castle they show before the movies start,” said Rachel, Hazel’s mom. “The trip gave her something fun and positive to talk to people about instead of talking about medical treatments and side effects.”
Hazel was able to relax and enjoy special treatment while not having to talk about her illness. She got to have an awesome time with her family and feel special but not different from other kids.
The week away from reality greatly helped Hazel's family relax together and regroup.
“The wish trip boosted Hazel's spirits and gave her some relief from the intensity of being a pediatric cancer patient,” Hazel’s mom shared.
