Cancer takes many things from children: their time to play, their smiles, their hair, sometimes whole portions of their childhoods and the magic of being a kid. Cancer took all of these things from Jasper, age 5 – all except for one.
Cancer takes many things from children: their time to play, their smiles, their hair, sometimes whole portions of their childhoods and the magic of being a kid. Cancer took all of these things from Jasper, age 5 – all except for one. Despite the cancer and the chemo, the pain and the nausea and all of the hospital rooms, Jasper still believes in something profoundly magical – or rather, someone magical. Jasper believes in Santa Claus with his whole heart, and when asked to choose his wish, out of anything he could possibly imagine, Jasper wished to meet the man himself.
Last Christmas, Make-A-Wish® Illinois granted this wish for Jasper. One morning in November, Jasper received a letter from Mrs. Claus, herself; notifying Jasper of his upcoming trip and all the great plans awaiting him. A few days after receiving the letter, Jasper and his family flew to the North Pole (also known as Hotel Santa Claus, which is in Rovaniemi, a town in northern Finland). There, Jasper and his sister were able to explore Santa’s workshop, Mrs. Claus’s Gingerbread Kitchen, the Elf workshop and, of course, meet Santa himself. Meeting the elusive magical man that fills all children with hope and joy was surreal for Jasper. Most of all, though, Jasper simply couldn't believe how long Santa’s beard was.
For Jasper, who’s battled so much, this trip “gave him something exciting and unique to look forward to, bringing hope, strength, and joy into his life,” said Claire Dee, Jasper’s mom.
