Concentrating on fun and the future are keeping this pre-teen motivated through cancer treatments.
Samone is a sweet and soft spoken 12-year-old from Chicago. Diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukemia, a type of cancer that is rare in children, Samone is currently undergoing treatment. With help from Discover, Make-A-Wish recently granted Samone’s shopping spree wish.
The day-long shopping extravaganza started bright and early with a special surprise at Samone’s home. Volunteers presented Samone with the number one item on her shopping list, a brand new bike in her favorite color, hot pink! With the number one thing on her list checked off Samone was excited to get her shopping spree started.
Samone and her family traveled via limousine to Oakbrook Center, where volunteers had worked with retailers to create a day filled with shopping for Samone’s favorite things, enjoying great food, and even participating in a holiday themed scavenger hunt. With dedicated sales associates at every stop and Discover employees helping Samone along the way, Samone was able to shop in style. She got everything she wanted and more including clothes from H&M Children and Justice, jewelry from Claire’s, and an iPad mini from Apple. Samone has a whole new wardrobe and several new things to decorate her room with including a new leopard print chair. It was truly a once in a lifetime experience.
However, Samone’s battle with cancer is not over, in a few short weeks she will undergo a bone marrow transplant. She and her family were happy to have this shopping spree to get Samone a few things that will help her through her hospital stay. It is more than just the things that Samone got that will help her though. It is the memories of the warm receptions she was given at each store, all of the volunteers treating her like a princess, and the pure joy she felt that day that will have a lasting impact.
