Thomas has a natural curiosity about the world and loves to learn. He became an Eagle Scout and continues to be inspired by other cultures and languages.
Just over a year ago, Thomas was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Even though much of his time since then has been taken up by doctor’s visits and cancer treatments, Thomas hasn’t lost his curious spirit. In 2016, Thomas’ child life specialist at St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital referred him to Make-A-Wish which lit a fire under his previous spark of interest in Spanish culture.
Thomas was thrilled about the chance to be immersed in the culture and was able to practice his Spanish language skills with the locals. He recalls that his favorite part of the adventure was being able to experience the food, traditions, language he learned so much about in his high school Spanish class.
Thomas’ wish was everything he could have hoped for. It reaffirmed his passion for Spanish and helped him get through the obstacles he faced during his treatments. He is thinking about college now and the possibility of returning to Spain as part of a study abroad program.
“Having a wish to dream about and plan gave him something exciting to think about when things were tough,” said Susan, Thomas’ mom. “We feel very grateful to have been able to share this awesome experience with him.”
