Aidan is an energetic, strong-willed, creative and mature kid who has an incredible sense of humor, loves great food and shopping. A 13-year-old junior high student, Aidan lives with his family in Springfield.
Last year, Aidan was diagnosed with a brain tumor that caused vision loss. He travels to Barnes Jewish Hospital
in St. Louis, Missouri for treatment. Aidan’s family was introduced to Make-A-Wish through an on-line support group.
Aidan considered several different options for his wish, and ultimately decided that sun and fun in southern California would fulfill his dream. The trip exceeded his expectations and included visits to beaches, theme parks, historical military sites, and other attractions.
In San Diego, he went on a Seal boat tour to learn about military history and enjoyed watching the Sea Lions. He also toured the USS Midway, the longest serving aircraft carrier.
On the drive to Los Angeles, he was in awe of the mountains and was excited to stop in Huntington Beach where he was mesmerized while watching the talented surfers.
When Aidan and his family checked into the hotel in Hollywood, the staff escorted them to their room. When the door opened, he noticed a full view of the landmark Hollywood sign. He looked at his family with sheer excitement and screamed, “Is that the REAL sign?” It was a moment his family will never forget.
Aidan was determined to find a cool pair of sneakers to bring home from Hollywood. When he entered a sneaker store, to his surprise the salesperson turned out to be his favorite shoe blogger. Of course he left with the coolest basketball shoes.
For Aidan, this wish was so much more than a trip with his family. The wish gave him an opportunity to focus on something really positive and wonderful instead of the illness. In his words, “it gave me extra attention for all the right reasons.” It also gave him an opportunity to look to the future with optimism and hope. He told his mom, “I want to go back to California and learn how to surf someday.”
