About Volunteering

Change lives…become a volunteer!

You can help make the wishes of special children come true in your local community when you become a volunteer for Make-A-Wish Illinois. Our volunteers range in age from 21 to 89, and include men and women who live and work throughout the state of Illinois. Time commitments and volunteer needs vary by community. Bilingual (English/Spanish speaking) volunteers are most needed. Please contact the Volunteer Services Team with questions.

More than 1,400 specially trained volunteers generously give their time and energy. Our volunteers come from all walks of the community to become involved in the mission through a variety of capacities.

General Volunteer
General Volunteers are volunteers who lend their time to help with Make-A-Wish events—whether it be a community event at a local school or business, or an internal event such as Wish Ball, general volunteers roll up their sleeves to do a variety of event support that helps raise funds and creates awareness about Make-A-Wish.

Requirements include: a general volunteer application, including a background and reference check and submission of online quiz.

Wish Granting Volunteer
Wish Granters work in teams of two to meet the families and plan and execute the wishes of the children we serve. This specialist role varies in need by community. Wish Granters are asked to grant at least 3 wishes per year and drive up to 2 hours to do so.

Requirements include: a general volunteer application, including a background and reference check, submission of online orientation quiz, online Wish Granter Training (2-3 hours) and in-person Wish Granter Training (2 hours).

Speaker’s Bureau Volunteer

Speaker’s Bureau Volunteers are volunteers who are trained to publicly speak on behalf of Make-A-Wish at various events to promote awareness of our mission, raise funds and/or recruit volunteers. The most requested speaker’s bureau volunteers are wish children and wish family members.

Requirements include: a general volunteer application, including a background and reference check, submission of online quiz, volunteering for at least one event and attend a one hour specialized training.

Office Volunteer

Volunteers who assist with day to day office tasks including mailings, data entry, answering phones, etc.

Requirements include: a general volunteer application including a background and reference check, submission of online quiz, volunteering for at least one event and an interview by supervising staff member.
