Volunteer Spotlight - Elizabeth Kazik
Using her experience as a wish parent to guide new families through hope-filled wish journeys.
We are excited to announce Elizabeth Kazik as our November Volunteer of The Month! As a volunteer of almost two years, Elizabeth is dedicated to making the whole wish journey an impactful experience for wish children and their families. Her relationship with Make-A-Wish began in 2013 when her son, Jonah, was granted a wish.
“I was so grateful for everything Make-A-Wish did that I wanted to become a wish granter and volunteer myself,” Elizabeth explained.
Raised in Deerfield, she attended Indiana University and moved to Chicago after graduating. Once she and her husband married they returned to the suburbs and now live in Gurnee with sons Nicholas, 13, and Jonah, 10.
It was her experience as a wish parent that drew her back to Make-A-Wish as a volunteer – a treasured time where the family got to relax, enjoy and not worry about a thing for a while.
“It was a tough year when Jonah was sick, but my family was and still is grateful to have had such a positive wish experience.”
And now, other wish families are benefiting from her knowledge and experience. She has granted four wishes with wish partner Helene Nathan, and is currently working on granting four more.
“Elizabeth takes the simplest joy or like the wish child has and turns it into something magical,” shared Wish Coordinator Janet Alvarado.
In addition to wish granting, Elizabeth has helped out with several events. For two years in a row she has dedicated her time to supporting the Macy’s Thanks for Sharing Campaign and the Macy’s Believe Campaign by giving rally speeches for the retailer’s staffers and serving as a letter counter. Furthermore, she has helped to fundraise at Panera lemonade stands and she shares her story at fundraisers and galas.
Elizabeth continues to support Make-A-Wish because she strongly believes in what the organization does and she loves the kids.
“I know how terrifying and painful it is to have a sick child, and am so grateful for the experience of Make-A-Wish. I want to pay that gift forward.”
“Meeting the wish families, empathizing with the parents, getting to know the kids, and knowing that you are making a difference in their lives,” are just a few of reasons Elizabeth continues to stay involved with Make-A-Wish.
We are thrilled to have such a compassionate volunteer that represents our mission so well. Thank you and congratulations on being our Volunteer of The Month, Elizabeth!
