Since joining the Make-A-Wish Illinois
volunteer team in 2015, Willia has dedicated much of her time to bringing hope, strength and joy to the children and families she serves as a Wish Granter! Willia has also gone above and beyond in supporting outreach efforts and volunteer recruitment
Originally from Mississippi, Willia’s family moved to Chicago when she was a child. Willia has always had a passion for children and for many years she worked as a Special Education Resource Teacher in Chicago preschools. When Willia retired in 2010 she was unsure of what to do to with her newfound free time. However, she discovered a solution after hearing Make-A-Wish Chief Executive Officer Stephanie Springs present to her church about the Make-A-Wish mission and volunteer opportunities. While reflecting on all of the possibilities she had to stay active, Willia shared, “I found volunteering for Make-A-Wish to be the best fit and it still is to this day!”
Recently, Make-A-Wish returned to Willia’s church - Progressive Baptist Church
and this time Willia played an integral role in coordinating the presentation! Volunteer Coordinator Emily Walters exclaims, “Willia is ready and willing to take on any challenge! She has stepped up to help with multiple outreach events and never stops sharing her passion for Make-A-Wish!” This is certainly true as Willia has worked hard to spread the word about Make-A-Wish to her church community and beyond!
When asked why she continues to support Make-A-Wish, Willia says, “I am in the position to bring some happiness to kids and families. As long as there is a need for my service, I’ll continue to do it.” We appreciate all that Willia does as a Wish Granter to bring such happiness to wish children and families. According to Volunteer Coordinator Marisa Bognanno, “Willia does a fantastic job of planning fun activities to build anticipation and keep her wish kiddos engaged throughout their wish journeys.”
Willia, thank you for your dedication and congratulations on being our Volunteer of the Month!
