Volunteer Spotlight - Mary Pisoni
Helping kids through Make-A-Wish is her new passion after a life spent helping them as a nurse.
In kicking off 2018 we are thrilled to announce Mary Pisoni as January’s Volunteer of The Month! Mary joined the Make-A-Wish volunteer team exactly three years ago and has supported our mission as a wish granter, medical outreach and events volunteer.
Mary hails from St. Louis, Missouri and has split her time between Chicago and St. Louis for the past four years. She and her husband love their Chicago adventure, and also love spending time in St. Louis with their three children, grandchildren and extended family members. Before retiring, Mary spent the last 20 years of her career as a school nurse and the last 12 years working with special needs children. Upon moving to Chicago in 2014 and looking for volunteer opportunities, someone recommended that she looked into Make-A-Wish. Mary recalls being thrilled at the suggestion of becoming a Make-A-Wish volunteer as she had referred a few children to the program when she was a school nurse!
In her role as wish granter, Mary brings her passion and creativity to make each wish child’s journey special and unique. According to Wish Coordinator Janie Carlisle, “You can tell Mary is really committed to creating magic and happiness for all wish children and families she works with.”
“I am in awe of the generosity of others and the amazing strong will of each and every wish child and their families,” Mary said.
Mary has also helped to drive referrals and spread the word about Make-A-Wish as a medical outreach volunteer. She enjoys spending time at the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital and speaking to families about how Make-A-Wish helps children cope with critical illnesses.
“Often I hear about how Make-A-Wish already DID bring hope, strength, and joy to a wish recipient!”
Mary continues to volunteer for Make-A-Wish because she loves to be a part of an organization that truly makes a difference in the life of children and families.
Congratulations, Mary, and thank you for helping us make a difference in the lives of so many families!
