Jackie brings hope to Lurie Children's epilepsy patients

Val Warner and Anna Nannicelli present a 2018 Women & Wishes Award to Jackie Wolak
The job of a nurse can be grueling at times. Children can associate you with both good things – like lollipops after a check-up – or bad things – like injections and other painful treatments. Jacqueline “Jackie” Wolak, an Advanced Practice Nurse and Family Nurse Practitioner in the Epilepsy Division of Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago, finds joy in bringing her patients hope through referring them to Make-A-Wish.

Volunteer Spotlight - Andrea Bell

Andrea Bell
Volunteers are the fuel of Make-A-Wish. Without them, fundraising events wouldn’t happen, there would be very little hospital outreach and, most importantly, wishes wouldn’t get granted at the pace they are granted today. Every Make-A-Wish volunteer, whether they’re granting wishes or staffing a table at a local hospital to spread the word about referrals, brings their own insight and experiences to the job and to the organization.

Social Worker Brings Inspiration to Cystic Fibrosis Patients

Angela Berger, LCSW
Being around children with critical illnesses and their families, who are often anxious and exhausted, would take a mental and emotional toll on anyone. It would be easy for someone to get caught up in negative feelings if they work at a children’s hospital.

For Angela Berger, a licensed clinical social worker at Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago, the best way to combat these emotions is to refer a child to Make-A-Wish.
