Internship Information

An internship at Make-A-Wish Illinois provides a unique opportunity to see how a renowned nonprofit organization runs from the inside. In addition to the learning opportunities outlined in the job descriptions below, all interns also:

Internship Requirements:

  • Must be able to commute to our downtown Chicago office (we are located in the River North neighborhood) or to our Peoria office (Community Relations only)
  • Minimum age for all internships is 18
  • Selected candidates will be asked to participate in a criminal background check.

***Applications are currently being accepted for the Spring Internship Cycle which runs January 3rd through May 26th. Preferred candidates will be contacted to schedule interviews in November. All internships are unpaid.***

 

Accounting

This internship provides first-hand experience with day-to-day accounting operations of one of Forbes’ 2015 top 50 largest U.S. charities. You will gain valuable insights into strategies for success from our Leadership team in group advisory sessions covering the organization’s Program Services, Fund Development, Marketing & Communications, and Operations. Additionally, you'll get to see how a nonprofit operates differently from a for-profit corporation, and gain invaluable experience working with one of the premier CRM solutions in the nonprofit sector.

Cause Marketing and Corporate Partnerships

This internship provides hands-on experience soliciting new, lapsed and returning participants for major corporate fundraising campaigns. Interns will learn how for-profit corporations partner with nonprofits like Make-A-Wish to further their initiatives. This role will directly participate in the coordination of key campaigns including Wishmakers at Work and Season of Wishes.

Communications

This internship provides real world experience creating content for various communications channels directly contributing to the magic of Make-A-Wish. The Communications Intern assists the Marketing Services team with many writing projects including writing biographical sketches of wish children, newsletter stories, web content and news releases. The position also involves interviewing wish families, contacting media, monitoring coverage and occasional social media projects.

Community Events

This internship provides candidates the opportunity to participate in the planning and execution of community fundraisers. This position will interact with some of our most passionate supporters and help raise funds in support of our mission through programs like Kids for Wish Kids®, Wish Makers on Campus®, and hundreds of external fundraising events.

Community Walks

This internship provides candidates the opportunity to participate in the planning and execution of community walk fundraisers in urban, rural and suburban locations that build community and raise funds in support of our mission.

Donor Communications and Stewardship

The Donor Communications and Stewardship Intern will gain first-hand exposure to the operations of a high-performing fundraising team and will be responsible for capturing outstanding stories about our wish families to further engage our donors. The position is strongly focused on writing projects, primarily biographical sketches of wish children for our Adopt-A-Wish® program.

Marketing

This internship provides exposure to what goes in to maintaining an amazing brand for a successful nonprofit organization and provides the opportunity to help build awareness about Make-A-Wish's mission and vision.The Marketing Intern assists the Marketing Services team with ensuring the Make-A-Wish brand is broadly visible and highly regarded. This will be done by helping to deliver strategic content and activate the organization’s constituent base to positively impact both revenue and referrals (reaching every eligible child in Illinois).

Medical Outreach

This internship provides candidates the opportunity to interact with wish families, medical professionals, and the community at large to increase qualified referrals and help more families experience the impact of a wish. The Medical Outreach intern works with the Medical Outreach team on the implementation of the chapter's Medical Outreach Marketing Plan.

Program Services - Coordinator

This internship provides candidates the opportunity to experience the magic of Make-A-Wish first hand by directly contributing to the wish planning process. A Program Services Coordinator Intern works with a team of four Wish Coordinators on the planning and implementation of the wish granting process.

Program Services - Manager

This internship provides candidates the opportunity to experience the magic of Make-A-Wish first hand by directly contributing to the wish planning process. A Program Manager Intern assists Wish Managers in beginning stages of the wish process.

Signature Events

This internship provides candidates first-hand experience with the planning and execution of a multi-million dollar fundraising gala. The Signature Events Intern assists with the administration of Make-A-Wish's highest grossing internal fundraising event, Wish Ball as well as other events throughout the internship cycle.

Volunteer Services

This internship provides the opportunity to be directly involved in the magic of wishes and our exciting events through interaction with our amazing volunteers. The Volunteer Services Intern works directly with the volunteer services staff to help manage over 1,800 volunteers throughout the state of Illinois in many varying assignments including wish granting and special events.
